Maximize natural light by having windows and skylights, and keep kitchen wall surfaces light in color to reflect daylight. Custom kitchen islands work great by using pendant or recessed fixtures to direct light onto the kitchen island and other work areas. Electrical codes will likely require that electrical outlets be located on the sides of fixed kitchen islands, not on the top, to prevent electrical shock.
A island counter can be a great place to put a microwave, blender or mixer. Some islands can have electrical outlets installed and can allow for the operation of these appliances while they are resting on the counter. A island countertop can also have a stove top installed to allow for more cooking space in the kitchen. These islands may also need to be equipped with an exhaust fan for the stove top. The design of a kitchen island is completely up to the homeowner.
When refacing your kitchen you might want to consider adding new countertops or an island. Treat yourself to those extras you've always wanted, such as, a Lazy Susan, space savers, spice racks and pull outs. With the money you'll be saving by refacing, you may choose to purchase some new appliances. A second kitchen sink can be included on the kitchen island. Use a sink that is deep enough for washing large pots and pans, and consider equipping the kitchen island with a trash compactor, garbage disposal, recycle bin and even a dishwasher. Cleanup will be much easier when these appliances are close by the sink.
